Tom Manion’s Thoughts
In a recent letter to supporters, Tom Manion shared some of his beliefs, ideas of and plans about his role as a US Congressman.
“Dear Friend,
“As someone who has spent a lifetime balancing budgets; in the Marine Corps, in business and at home; it has always been my strong belief that allowing families and small businesses to keep more of their hard-earned dollars grows our economy. This benefits everyone through increased consumer spending and investment in American small businesses.
“The government’s spending decisions result in billions of wasted dollars. This is why as a Member of Congress one of my first actions will be to support actions to freeze the budget and eliminate runaway spending. Estimates show over 300 billion dollars are lost annually to waste, fraud and abuse. This is simply inexcusable.
“How can we ever hope to balance a budget that is fraught with so much inefficiency? By freezing the budget and carefully reviewing expenditures, we can begin to introduce fiscal restraint to our out-of-control spending.
“The recent bailout bill is another example of our broken government. This bill does very little to address the systemic issues that brought our economy to this terrible point. I would look to revise lending standards, regulate the problematic insurance products and privatize Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
“Occasionally we hear commentary about government creating jobs. The simple fact is; the government doesn’t create jobs, businesses do. I would support legislation to reduce the business tax rate in order to grow jobs.
“I am also in favor of tax incentives for companies so they can keep the right jobs here in the U.S.
“Our economy will continue to struggle as long as we are dependent on foreign oil. Let’s keep that 700 billion dollars from foreign oil here in the U.S. by increasing our internal supply of oil. Thanks to new technology, this can be accomplished in an environmentally friendly way, as we also develop alternative energy sources and conservation incentives.
“Tax reform is another area that will boost our economy. Legislation such as the Fair and Simple Tax (FAST) Act simplifies the tax code for all Americans with a new, one-page tax filing form and common-sense tax solutions. This pro-growth tax plan is designed to relieve the tax burden on American families, encourage business investment and job creation, and facilitate continued economic growth.
“There is so much to be done to get America back on the right track, yet I have no doubt that our best days are ahead!
“I hope to have your vote on November 4th, so that I can get to Washington and get to work.”
